"Joseph, 86 years of age, of Rutherford, NJ, passed away Sunday, February 22, 2015. He was born in Jersey City, NJ on October 21, 1928. He was the youngest of 7 siblings. Beloved Husband of the late Theresa (nee: Labuz), the love of his life, for 45 years, who passed away in 2010. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II, joining at the age of 16. He was self-employed as a painter. He played baseball in the minor league system of the Cincinnati Reds organization for 8 years following his service to his country. After residing in Hoboken, NJ, where he had many life-long friends, he and his beloved Theresa took up residence in Rutherford, NJ.
While living in Rutherford, Joe became a fixture in the community as Head Baseball Coach of both the local Babe Ruth League and American Legion teams. Under his leadership, his clubs annually won Town, County and State championships during the 1970's. Joe coached and mentored many young men who benefited from his guidance in achieving great success at the High School, College and Major League levels.
Following retirement, Joe became well known to St. Mary's and Rutherford High School students as the Crossing Guard for 15 years at the comer of Franklin Place and Chestnut Street which is the intersection between the 2 schools. He was a friendly face to everyone, always willing to discuss the previous day's game with the student athletes. He continued to umpire high school baseball games until almost 80 years of age.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Eva (nee: Pluta), and his seven elder siblings: Walter, Sally, Mary, Stanley, Jr., Anthony and William. He is survived by his daughter, Joanna Behan, grandsons, Joseph Behan and Christopher Behan, sister-in-law, Virginia Labuz Bonwich, his nephew, Bernard Sobolewski, many other nieces and nephews and many friends including: Stephen McAuley, Gabriel Tufano and Catherine Gleeson-Rosson , who selflessly provided for him in his final days."
Funeral Wednesday Feb. 25, at 9:15, from the Calhoun-Mania Funeral Home 19 Lincoln Avenue, Rutherford followed by a 9:30am Mass of Christian Liturgy in the Church of St. Mary, 91 Home Ave. Rutherford. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery, No. Arlington

Friends will be received Wednesday morning 8:30 to 9:15am
